Newborn Photoshoot Tips & Prep Guide

Preparing for Your Newborn Session

To help ensure a smooth, relaxed session and the best possible experience, here are a few helpful preparation tips:

1. Before the session
If possible, try to keep your baby awake for about 30–45 minutes before the session. Activities like a gentle washcloth bath or a bit of “naked time” can help stimulate them. This often helps babies fall into a deeper sleep during the session.

2. Feeding schedule
Please feed your baby just before leaving for the studio and plan for a top-up once you arrive. A full belly usually means a calmer, more content baby. There is plenty of time built into the session for feeding as well if needed.

3. Studio comfort
The studio will be warm and cozy for your baby’s comfort, so I recommend wearing light, breathable layers for yourself.

4. Baby’s skin
Flaky skin, redness, or little blemishes are completely normal for newborns and nothing to worry about. These details are taken care of during the editing process.

5. Nails
Please ensure your nails are either natural or painted in neutral tones. Hands often appear in the images, and neutral colours help keep the focus on your baby.

6. Makeup
There’s no need for foundation. Any blemishes or colour correction will be handled during editing. Mascara, lashes, and a lipstick or lip gloss are more than enough for a polished, natural look.

7. Family photos
For family portraits, I suggest light, solid-coloured tops in whites, creams, light greys, soft pastels, or dark grey/black. Fitted tops or dresses with simple 3/4 sleeves photograph beautifully and help highlight your newborn. Avoid patterns and logos for a timeless look. I also have a blog post and Pinterest board with more inspiration if you’d like.

8. Hair and makeup recommendations
Style your hair in a way that makes you feel your best. Soft waves or curls are always a lovely option for longer hair. For makeup, a matte finish photographs best, as shiny or sparkly products can reflect light.

If you’d like professional help, here are some trusted local recommendations:

  • Marina Georgia Makeup: Travels to your home (within her service area).
  • Eva Svobodova: Experienced in maternity sessions, travels to your home. Instagram: @eva.s.makeup | +1 604 352 9493.
  • Zazou Salon: located just 3 minutes from the studio (advance booking recommended)

9. Session time and amenities
Newborn sessions typically last about 3 hours, with plenty of time built in for feeding and soothing. During the session, feel free to relax in the sitting area. Many parents watch a movie, answer emails, read, or even nap while I work with their little one. Snacks, drinks, and WiFi are available for your comfort, and the password is posted in the sitting area.

Most importantly, please know there is no pressure for baby to “perform.” Every baby is different, and the session is always baby-led. Your baby’s comfort and safety come first, and we move at their pace.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to help and want this experience to feel as stress-free and enjoyable as possible for you and your family.
