Vancouver Newborn Photoshoot With Siblings – What to Expect

Why newborn family photography?

Okay, so let’s be honest! Newborn with their sibling portraits can be a bit of a challenge. When a new baby arrives in a family you really don’t know how the older siblings are going to respond. Sometimes they love them and can’t get enough of the new baby and sometimes they don’t want anything to do with the newest addition. I always warn parents that it might be a little harder to get a great sibling shot especially if the siblings are younger. Sometimes the cute sibling images are composites if I deem it to be safer for everyone involved. Please don’t expect a certain pose or image as the little ones might surprise you by not wanting to do this exact one and I work with what they are happy to do.

What’s important for newborn & sibling photographs

One of the most important things to remember is that many times we just have to let kids be themselves and go with the flow. I always aim for two different poses with siblings.  It’s awesome when we get both but again it completely depends on your little one. We will make the shoot comfortable and relaxed with music playing and some bubbles and favourite toys to capture their attention. One of my favourite portraits is big brother or big sister laying facing up and holding on to baby safely on a beautiful fluffy rug. This is a very safe position for your newborn and I love the close connection we can capture between the siblings.

It’s also important to make sure that you’re fully prepared for your session ahead of time.

Options for newborn sibling poses

Another position I like to capture is, big brother or big sister is sitting criss-cross-apple-sauce and then we can have baby safely wrapped and supported upright in their lap with arms folded for support. I always have a parent sty nearby to make sure baby is safe at all times. And of course this all comes complete with playing peek-a-boo listening / singing all those favourite toddler songs that play in the studio.

To get their attention we might introduce some bubbles or their favourite toy. They are all adorable and keep in mind that sometimes you just have to let them be themselves. If they are having a very energetic day and I deem the baby is not safe close to them we will place your newborn baby girl or baby boy in a bucket and take a picture then we take baby out and have the sibling sit by the bucket and we will make a composite by editing the two images together. There are lots of options to get your treasured sibling shot! We have this covered!
