Your child’s life will be filled with countless incredible and beautiful stages, but there is something particularly precious about a newborn baby. For a brief window of time, they curl up and get into a very deep sleep which makes posing them much easier.
If you’re looking for posed newborn photos, the ideal period of time is quite short and I recommend when they are 5 – 14 days new.
Are you wondering if you’ve waited too long to get newborn pictures taken?
The Best Age For Newborn Photos: 5-14 Days
If you are interested in getting professional baby photos of your newborn, you should book as early as you can to make sure your favourite photographer is able to fit you in.
When your little one is still new to the world he or she still likes to be curled up in all the poses and goes into a much deeper and longer sleep. They are also much more flexible which makes posing them a breeze and is why most professional photographers recommend this age.
Twins, Multiplets, and Preemies
Premature babies, twins, and multiples all tend to be a quite a bit smaller and might have to stay in the hospital for an extended period. Therefor their window is a little longer up to 5 weeks.
But What If My Little One Is Already Older Or I Could Not Get A Photoshoot Sooner?
Don’t panic, I know life is much more busier now that you have a little one to take care of and figure out new routines. You and your family are adjusting to the presence of a new little one, and time can fly by quickly. Another good opportunity is during the third to fifth week to still get that adorable photoshoot. Depending on the baby they will still be pose-able and flexible, though probably a little chubbier and might want to stretch out a bit more.
Depending on your baby girl or baby boy, it’s possible they will be too big and or too awake for certain poses or specific props. They also might not be interested in being wrapped or swaddled. I am a baby led photographer and go by what your baby likes and does not. A professional photographer should never force your baby in any pose and every baby is unique in their likes and dislikes.
My Baby Is Already 6-8 Weeks, Am I Too Late?
At this point, whether or not your photoshoot goes as you planned it is pretty up in the air. The newborn poses might be too late and your baby will most likely be too large for most props, hats and outfits.
We can still capture a beautiful gallery with a focus on your little ones expressions.
Too Old For Newborn Pictures But Too Young For Milestones
If your baby is older than nine weeks old but younger than four months old, it might be best to just schedule a shoot for when they are a bit older. At this point, your baby will look too awake and too large to capture that adorable newborn look. They are not yet able to sit up by themselves, which won’t give a you big variety in your gallery. I would recommend capturing those moments at home and schedule your profession sitter or milestone session once your baby can sit comfortably.
If you’re interested in capturing the first moments of your baby’s life, there is a relatively small window of time that is ideal. For this reason, it’s a good idea to get booked on your favorite photographer’s schedule well before your due date. This way, you can be sure to not miss these precious first few days and weeks.
