When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?

Bringing home your new baby is one of the most exciting and emotional times in your life. Those first days fly by in a blur of feedings, snuggles, and sleepless nights—and before you know it, your tiny newborn is already changing. That’s why parents often ask me: “When is the best time for newborn photos?”

As a Vancouver newborn photographer, I recommend scheduling your baby’s photo session within the first 14 days of life. Here’s why timing matters, plus what to expect if your baby is a little older when we photograph them.

Why the First 2 Weeks Are Ideal

The best time for newborn photos is within the first couple of weeks, newborns are still very sleepy, flexible, and curled up from being in the womb. This makes it possible to capture those sweet, snuggly poses parents love, the tiny toes tucked in, the chin resting on hands, and the peaceful, dreamy expressions.

After about two weeks, babies tend to become more alert, stretch out their arms and legs, and spend longer stretches awake. This doesn’t mean beautiful photos aren’t possible, but it does mean we’ll approach the session a little differently.

What If My Baby Is Older Than 2 Weeks?

Life with a newborn is unpredictable, and sometimes photo sessions can’t happen right away. If your baby is a little older, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, or beyond, we can still create gorgeous images.

Older newborns tend to be more awake and expressive, which can result in wonderful wrapped session that capture their bright eyes and early personality. Parents often love the mix of connection shots, family portraits, and close-up detail photos at this stage.

So don’t worry if you’ve missed the early window, you’ll still walk away with timeless memories.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

Whether your baby is 6 days old or 6 weeks old, a little preparation helps the session go smoothly. Here are my top tips:

  • Keep baby comfy and awake. A warm bath and a good feed before the session help your baby feel relaxed and sleepy.
  • Relax and enjoy the process. Babies cry, wiggle, and need breaks, and that’s completely normal. I’ll guide you through everything.
  • Include yourself in the photos. Parents often think the session is just for the baby, but family portraits are some of the most meaningful images you’ll treasure years from now.

When to Book Your Newborn Photographer

The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy in the second trimester. I reserve your due date on my calendar, and once your baby arrives, we’ll set the exact date. This guarantees that we’re within that perfect newborn photography window and takes the stress off your shoulders.

If your baby has already arrived, don’t hesitate to reach out, I only schedule a certain amount of due dates and if they haven’t been born yet or came early, I might have a spot available.

Creating Memories That Last

Your baby will never be this small again. Capturing their tiny fingers, button nose, and those fleeting newborn expressions is a gift you’ll treasure for decades. Whether you choose to preserve your images in a custom album, display them as wall art in your home, or keep them as digital keepsakes, your newborn photos become part of your family’s story.

If you’re expecting in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, or West Vancouver and want to plan your newborn session, I’d love to chat with you.
