Missed the Newborn Window? Older Newborn Photos (4 to 10 Weeks)

Babies don’t always arrive on schedule, and the first weeks at home can be a beautiful blur of feeding, cuddles and very little sleep. If your baby is already four, six or even ten weeks old and you’re wondering whether you’ve missed your chance for newborn photos, you haven’t.

Older newborn photos are beautiful at 4 to 10 weeks. In my North Vancouver studio, I offer an Older Newborn Session made for babies who are a little past the classic newborn stage. As a mom of two, I remember exactly how fast those first weeks go.

What changes after the first few weeks

Classic posed newborn portraits, with babies sleepy and settled, are easiest in the first three weeks. After that, babies are more awake, stronger and like to stretch out. Instead of trying to recreate the sleepy newborn look, I plan your session around who your baby is right now.

And honestly, this stage is so special. Those first alert looks, tiny expressions and the very first smiles only last a short while.

What an older newborn photo session looks like

  • More expression. Wide-eyed looks, little hands, yawns and stretches, and sometimes those first smiles.
  • Lots of family portraits. You holding your baby, the two of you together, and the whole family, including big brothers and sisters.
  • Simple, timeless setups. Soft, neutral backdrops that keep the focus on your baby.
  • Safety and comfort first. Your baby’s safety and comfort always come first, and I follow your baby’s cues the whole session.

Planning the session around your baby

Just like every newborn session, the session is led by your baby. We take breaks for feeding and cuddles whenever needed, and there’s no pressure for your baby to perform. Some babies are calm and curious the whole time, others need a little more soothing, and that’s all part of it.

Before your session, I’ll send you a short questionnaire about your colours and what you love, and I’ll plan everything so it’s ready when you arrive. You can see more about how my newborn sessions work on my newborn photography page.

What it costs

The session fee for an Older Newborn Session is $290, the same as a regular newborn session. Images are selected and purchased separately after you view your gallery, and are not included in the session fee. Your private online gallery is ready within a week of your session. You can find more details on my pricing page.

If you’re still expecting

If your baby hasn’t arrived yet, the best time for newborn portraits is the first three weeks. You can choose classic wrapped and posed portraits, or a simple and natural session on whites and creams. You can read more in when is the best time for newborn photos. Please book during your pregnancy to secure your spot, and send me a quick message within a day or two after your baby arrives so we can set your session date.

And if that window has already passed, I’d still love to meet your little one.

Older newborn photo questions

Is 6 weeks too old for newborn photos?

Not at all. At 6 weeks, I plan an Older Newborn Session with more expression and more family portraits instead of sleepy posed portraits. Many parents end up loving how much of their baby’s personality shows.

What if my baby is awake and won’t sleep?

That’s totally fine, and very normal at this age. Your baby doesn’t need to sleep or perform. Awake, curious looks are a big part of what makes these portraits special, and we take breaks for feeding and cuddles whenever your baby needs them.

Can siblings be in the photos?

Yes. Big brothers and sisters can join for the family portraits.

How much is an older newborn session?

The session fee is $290. Images are selected and purchased separately after you view your gallery, and are not included in the session fee.

Where is your studio?

My studio is in North Vancouver, and I welcome families from Vancouver, Burnaby, West Vancouver and across the Lower Mainland.

Let’s capture this stage

Please send me a message with your baby’s birthday, and I’ll be in touch. If you’d rather chat first, you can also book a quick call. If none of the times work for you, please just let me know a day and time that works better, and we can go from there.
