Hiring a professional newborn photographer is the best way to capture this very special moments from pregnancy to your precious baby boy or baby girl at only a few days old.
However, you want to find the best fit for your family from style to experience and personality.
1. Ask for Recommendations
Ask your friends and family if and where they had their newborn photos taken and if they would recommend their photographer. You can also ask for recommendation in your local Moms groups or even your doula or midwife. You can then research the photographer and decide if they may be a good match for you.
2. Check Online Reviews
Whether or not you get a recommendation, it’s always important to check out online reviews. While your friend may have had a good experience, you want to makes sure so did others.
Be sure to read both the good and the bad reviews. While a few bad reviews aren’t necessarily anything to worry about, you’ll want to make sure there aren’t any patterns forming. If multiple customers have the same issue, you’ll want to consider choosing a different photographer. Also always good to see the bad reviews from different angles as maybe there was an honest misunderstanding.
3. Look at Their Portfolio
Every photographer has their own unique style. Before hiring a photographer, you’ll want to look through their portfolio and ensure that their style matches your own as your final images will be edited in their style.
There are different style of newborn photographers:
- Posed – This style is very popular and the photography will pose your little one in different adorable poses and in props like baskets and bowls. They include little stuffs, pillows, bonnets, headbands and so on. For example I am a baby-led posed newborn photographer. Baby-led means baby calls the shots and not every newborn likes every pose, so I will move on to the next and not force them into something they are uncomfortable with.
- Lifestyle – This is another option and is often done in your own home. It focuses on the connection between the family and their new baby in a more documentary way.
Please make sure the you choose the photographer that specializes in the style of session you are looking.
4. Consider Safety
Safety should be your photographer’s number one concern. Your photographer should be open to answer any questions about your baby’s safety during the photoshoot.
Questions to ask could include if they have taken workshops on how to safely pose newborns?
5. Ask How a Typical Newborn Photoshoot Experience looks like
Getting those precious newborn photos isn’t always easy. Your baby may get fussy or even have an accident in the middle of the shoot. Ask a potential photographer how they handle these situations. Does the photographer allow for nursing breaks? Are you able to watch while the photographer takes your baby’s images?
6. Set Up a (virtual) Meeting or Pre-Consultation
Most newborn photography sessions take about 2 to 4 hours to complete. You want to make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer and especially when taking family pictures. It will show in your final images if you do not feel comfortable and that is not something you want to have happen.
